This page is purely informational — we don’t run tile-set or table affiliate links, so there’s nothing here shaped by a sales incentive. It’s a starting point before you evaluate specific listings yourself.
The Short Version
- Tile size: most Chinese Mahjong tiles run 40–42mm, larger than American-style sets (~36mm). Size matters a lot more if you’re buying for an automatic table, which is factory-matched to a specific dimension.
- Material: melamine is the durable, affordable default; acrylic feels heavier and more premium; bamboo-style composites lean toward aesthetics.
- Numerals: some sets add small Arabic numerals alongside traditional characters, which can shorten the learning curve for new players.
- Manual vs. automatic: a manual set is tiles plus a case and racks; an automatic table shuffles (and often deals) mechanically, cutting setup time to under a minute but at a significantly higher cost.

What we won’t do: hand you a ranked “best products” list with invented ratings. Real spec differences — tile dimensions, material, shuffle mechanism — are what should drive your decision, and the guides above walk through each of those on its own merits.
